CALLI

Having Daemon sitting at the table and eating with us, even if he did only pick at his food despite the fact that he was clearly ravenous, was the thing dreams are made of.

I ate with one hand, preferring to keep one of them touching him at all times. I needed it. That reminder that this was real. That he really was sitting right next to me.

But as amazing as it was, and as insistent as Daemon was that he was okay, it was obvious only a few minutes in that the talk with Uncle Damien and his dad, along with the short trip here was taking it out of him, and before long, Alex and I were helping him back to bed. He almost immediately crashed the second his head hit the pillow.

“It’s weird seeing him sleep. When I was a kid, I legit used to think he was the spawn of Satan or something. He just used to be awake all the time like some ethereal creature.”

“Was he always like that?” I ask, not taking my eyes off Daemon’s bruised face.

“No. As a young kid, he was just like me. But then our grandfather used to…” Alex trails off, clearly not wanting to go there.

“Lock you in his shed?” I ask, wanting him to know that I’m already aware of the heinous things that monster used to do to them.

“Yeah. It changed him. I mean, it had a pretty bad effect on me too, but nothing like it did to Daemon.”

“If he weren’t already dead, I’d go and kill him myself for hurting both of you,” I promise.

“Daemon should have got the chance. He needed it after the years of abuse and torture.”

“Did he… did he have it worse than you, do you think?”

“I don’t think, Calli. I know. I did everything I could to prevent it. If Daemon just joined the football team, hung out with us more, then he wouldn’t have needed to be there.”

“Does your mum know?” I ask, already guessing the answer.

“No. Dad did, though. Never did a thing to stop the cunt. Don’t tell her, Calli. It’ll break her heart.”

“Don’t tell her what?” Gianna asks behind us.

“Fuck,” Alex hisses.

“Do we need to have a chat, Son?”

“You okay with him?” Alex asks me.

“Of course.”

“When he wakes, if he’s feeling up to it, let him have that shower he’s so desperate for,” Gianna told me. “Wrap his dressings with this.” She passes over some waterproof pads. “Then give me a shout and I’ll come and change everything.”

They both disappear down the hall, Alex leaving me with a pained expression etched onto his face. My gut knots, knowing that he’s going to have to give her some of the truth, but I doubt he’ll give her all the horror stories of their past. Hell, I’m pretty sure I don’t have them. Daemon has only touched the surface of what he experienced as a young boy, and something tells me that I might never get to hear the worst.
